20. There are 20 places in my house alone that I can access clean water (not including my pool full of it). There was not a single place in Batey San Rafael, Dominican Republic that had clean water.165 people drank, bathed, and cooked with the same dirty unpure water. The children were sick; they drank the water their mother bathed in. The mothers cooked with the water their neighbors went to the bathroom in. It was a never-ending cycle of dirty water. In 3 days 29 brothers and sisters in Christ were able to change 165 people’s lives for forever. The water crisis is not only the world’s thirst for clean water, but also the world’s thirst for the living water-Jesus Christ. In the past 7 days in the Dominican Republic, our team not only got to share purification for their water, but we also got to share purification for their lives.
Jesus Promises Living Water
On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)
What a GLORIOUS promise it is to never thirst again when you have Jesus Christ. By installing 27 filters in Batey San Rafael, we not only shared clean water, but also the love of Christ. I cannot express the feeling of being able to experience such love and joy these people had. Where they seemed to be poor, they were much richer than me. I take it as a challenge to myself to live everyday like they do, with the joy and the love for the Lord pouring out of their hearts. It is such a beautiful thing. And now, because of The Well, 165 people will never thirst again. Mothers who are breast-feeding their babies will not pass on diseases. Men who cut themselves at work will not infect their wound. The nausea, diarrhea, cramps, and vomiting will drastically decrease. Children can now be children. Mothers can now be mothers. Fathers can now be fathers. But it doesn’t stop here. 780 million people suffer from unclean water. Lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills children at a rate equivalent of a jumbo jet crashing every four hours. More people have a mobile phone than a toilet. Every 21 seconds a child dies from unsanitary water. Which means over the course of you reading this 160 children died from water. Water! Dirty water is really a simple fix. For one household to have clean water it costs approximately 125 dollars for a 10 part system. How many times have I spent that on a pair of jeans or a new Free People top? The first thing I did when I got home was take a long hot shower. And I felt guilty about it. Why did I have not only clean water but hot water when 780 million people do not? But then I realized, yes I am allowed to enjoy my shower and my ice maker and my swimming pool. But no, I am not allowed to take it for granted. I now thank the Lord for blessing me with such a treasure. Not only did this trip show me what I have to be thankful for, but also that I can make a difference in the world.
